QUESTION OF THE DAY: DO YOU AGREE WITH RI STATE REP PETER PALUMBO?

Prayer at Cramden High School

This saga has been around awhile, read about the outcome last week. After all the political stories with the presidential election each and every day I had forgotten about this story, until I saw this. Thought I’d put this here today and see what your opinions and thoughts are regarding this matter.

This is via The Blaze:

Last week, we brought you the story about a prayer mural that was banned in Cranston, Rhode Island, after a young atheist protested its presence in her school. On Wednesday, Jessica Ahlquist, 16, won her case against Cranston High School West when U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Lagueux ruled that the district must remove the banner immediately and pay her legal fees.

Now, a new controversy is brewing after Rhode Island State Representative Peter Palumbo, a Democrat, made comments about Ahlquist on the John DePetro Show. During his interview, Palumbo called her “an evil little thing” and said ”Poor thing. And it’s not her fault. She’s being trained to be like that.”

While the first statement may have been said in a joking manner, non-believers are equally upset with what he said next. When the show’s host questioned whether Palumbo really believes the young girl is evil, he softened his rhetoric a bit, saying, “…she’s being coerced by evil people.”

In the Humanist Examiner, Michael Stone penned his disgust with the politician’s commentary:

Palumbo’s wholesale slander of an entire community is being challenged by atheists, freethinkers and other secular Americans. This weekend an intense campaign of protest began to register complaint and disgust with Palumbo’s derogatory and disrespectful remarks.

While atheists and non-believers are outraged by his statements, this seems to be only one example of the push-back the young woman is receiving as a result of her activism. Last week, following the court’s decision in her favor, she shared some of the challenges she’s been coping with.

“It has been a very long and difficult year for me and my family and we’re just so glad it has finally been decided,” Ahlquist said. “I’ve had to deal with a lot of harassment and negative flak from people who disagree with my views and opinions, but it’s all worth it.”

There is more to the story with links, you can find it all here.

Democrat Rep. Peter Palumbo speaks his mind:

Here’s a brief history from last week, her speaking as well.

Ahlquist‘s main argument in the case has been that a prayer mural present in her school’s auditorium is offensive to non-Christians. Additionally, she claims that it has made her feel ostracized and, thus, she has petitioned fervently for its removal.

Here’s a news report from April 2011, during which Ahlquist discusses her opposition to the mural:

So let’s see, one lone sixteen year old girl, who doesn’t like the words ‘Heavenly Father’ and ‘Amen’ manages to take down a banner that has hung in the high school auditorium for over 60 some years because it offends her and her atheist sensibilities…isn’t that just precious!

By the way, if you listen to the video, she also wants “In God We Trust” to be removed from all money as well.

Of course the ACLU wouldn’t have anything to do with this from the get-go…now would they?

They worked together hand in glove, and I have to wonder about her parents involvement or non-involvement as well.

I want to know when this is going to be put to a halt in our country…or do you already think this and many other stories like these will end up winning the day across this land and help destroy this nation and what she stands for once and for all?

Palumbo put it in a nutshell…“she’s being coerced by evil people.”

  2. More militant atheism. I’m what you’d consider a non-believer, but none of anything she’s whining about offends me. I’m sick of the whole freedom from religion screwballs screaming “That offends me” at anything Christian. I don’t see them screaming at and suing muslims.
I don’t go around bashing other’s religious beliefs. Well, except Islam. I’ll bash that crap all day long, since I don’t consider it religion.

The school should appeal this decision and have it go to a higher court, that way this girl and her family will have to endure a long drawn out battle. In the mean time the mural would stay where its at.

Seems to me in many cased people give-up and give-in too easily…don’t know about this school, but sometimes depending on topic and funding people do go all the way to the top fighting this BS…

What makes me angry is we shouldn’t even have to be worrying about things like this in our country…this should be a given, and if it offends your sensibilities, you can exit this country any day of the week…and don’t let the door hit in the a$$ on the way out.

      …and STAY OUT!

Here’s a little jewel about this judge, I believe if the school pushed it they could reverse the judges decision and if the people of Rhode Island pushed just a little bit they probably could have this judge removed.

  8. She’s on the side of the left-wing fascists so she is either evil or an unwitting tool. Adults frequently prod kids to get involved in these crusades just as drug dealers use kids as drug mules and sales people. It insulates the adults from their shameful behavior. Using kids like this is also rationalized as a “lesson in civic affairs” for the little darlings. That’s nonsense of course because the adults use the kids so they don’t have to learn the entire lesson, which is that there are consequences for destructive behavior. There’s nothing particularly innocent or morally superior about people who aren’t adults yet. The average adult is infinitely wiser than the average kid. In fact, most kids are fairly messed up and selfish one way or another. Of course one of the oldest and biggest leftist lies is that children are somehow superior to adults in most ways. It’s just another way for leftist adults to use the kids as foot soldiers against their adult enemies: decent right wing White citizens. Third-World savages are used by the leftists in exactly the same way.

Does anyone really believe that once Christianity is destroyed some other religion or pseudo-religion won’t fill the vacuum.

Name one society or culture past or present solely based on analytic thought, that excludes all belief.

  11. BT,

Reminds me of the early seventies when my high school (Lee’s Summit, MO) had a beautiful candle lighting event on the last day before Christmas Vacation. It was truly beautiful… from one candle which represented the birth of Christ… the flame was then forwarded to each candle of every student in the auditorium.

A single student and the stinking ACLU ended the event because the school district bowed down due to the legal cost.

I find it amazing how a handful of individuals and the stinking ACLU which absolutely hates anything representing good in our society takes aways my freedoms.

They are our enemies, and everyone knows it. There commie ties are deep as well on many ways…I know that’s not a newsflash, but it amazes me they and a few other groups still have the power they do.

People should have fought back a lot harder long ago…and this would have been put to a halt. Now it’s been a on a runaway train…and I don’t see it slowing up anytime soon.

Early day tomorrow, got to move away from this keyboard and hit the sack.

Btw…what happened to you and your school makes me hair on fire as well…it’s a disgrace what ‘We the People’ as a whole have let happen….we have to put a stop to this once and for all.

It’s heartbreaking what we’ve witnessed happen to this country decade after decade right up to this very day.

  12. I had originally decided not to post concerning this subject but, stupid got the best of me. I have to admit I am a “Non believer.” More exactly I have problems with what has been called organized religion. After Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, Jimmy Swaggert, Jim Jones and Fred Phelps, etc I moved away from such. I have read the bible twice from cover to cover and I find quite a lot of sensible advice there. However, I consider it human logic rather than divinely inspired. A number of years ago an evangelical type said to me “If you believe as you do why don’t you just kill someone. There wouldn’t be any reason not to.” The reason I answered was I don’t want someone to kill me for no reason. If I am classed as an atheist, so be it. At least I am not in the class with Madeline Murray, Michael Newdow and such. You can put copies of the commandments in every post office and courthouse in the land and it will not bother me one bit. There is some good advice in that document. “In God We Trust” printed on our money is fine as long as it spends. The young lady in this confrontation seems to be a pawn being used by adults you are looking for attention. It’s sad but it happens. All condemnations accepted.

Your opinions on this matter are well-stated…and I agree with much of what you said, plus agree with your summation regarding Jessica, she’s nothing but a pawn…hopefully as she matures with age she will come to realize that.

Unfortunately, in the meantime, much damage is done when it comes to issues like this across this land. I just tire of this type of thing…in fact it disgusts me to no end.

I dont like mega churches and these large religious orders, My faith is a very simple down to earth type, I can worship god without the useless baggage, most of the sunday tv preachers are like getting a letter from a politician in the end they gonna hit you up for money.

I can identify fully with your assessment. I am probably more agnostic than atheist. I have spent a lifetime in an allied part of science. In 1633 Galileo postulated the earth was not the center of the universe and he was convicted and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. This is an example of the conflict of religion and politics. Islam is the height of this as is those that want to control society by religious fiat. I have no problem with a belief in god as long as it rests with and does not denigrate science. If you or anyone else wants to discuss God’s place in the formation of the universe I am willing to sit down and have that discussion. Sorry for the ramblings.

I claimed to be an agnostic until age twenty-eight. I went to church almost every Sunday growing up and like many kids I felt it was torture. Then around age twenty-three, the Holy Spirit started tugging at my heart while I was in the military. I spoke with our Military Chaplin regarding my feelings… to make the story short, I finally accepted Jesus Christ at twenty-eight.

I find it somewhat amazing how we teach history in our schools based on books which have written documents known as history… the Bible is just another history book instructed to be written by God… or at least that is my belief.

Anyhow not2latenow, I hope there will come a day when the Holy Spirit takes hold of your heart as it did me… God Bless.

Thanks for the thoughts. Part of my upbringing was in a boarding home operated by the Episcopal Church in Jacksonville, FL. I guess you can say I am a backslid Episcopal. At my age and if familial history has anything to do with it I have approximately 4 or 5 years left to mill around. I have no problem with your belief and I admire you for your honesty. The term agnostic just means I’m not sure and I would like something more than the writings of ancient, superstitious men to define my view of the world. What I have a problem with is those that demand that education teach that the earth is 2000 years old. I think there is more proof to the contrary. Be secure in your belief since it can provide a great deal of comfort when bad things happen.

  16. Having been raised by Bible thumping northern Baptist parents, I can proudly state I am an agnostic. If this individual REALLY was an atheist, this would not bother them. To a REAL atheist, God does not exist and “god” (small G) is only a word like “air” or “rock”. If the concept offends them, then they are NOT real atheists. They are subconsciously afraid that they may be wrong and when they finally die they may actually end up burning in hell forever.

What they and their liberal lap dog judges have done is twist the words of the constitution to mean anything they want it to mean. All they are doing is walking all over the rights of one religion in favor of another that agree with their communist views. They do not represent freedom at all. They only represent Obama’s socialist marxist agenda. This is another reason why we can’t afford to have Obama for another 4 years so he can stack the courts with more liberal activist judges.
