Friends, color me beet red with fury…when I read this story earlier today I had to wonder where we are and what country we are living in. If this isn’t a perfect example of what the definition of disdain is for those who’ve served is…I don’t know what is. Leave it it to New York to lead the way with this…you must read this and and post how you feel about this situation after doing so.

This is via FN:

As budget cuts are set to silence live performances of Taps at military funerals in New York, one military bugler told FoxNews.com the iconic musical piece should always be performed by an Honor Guard musician.

Jari Villanueva, director of the Maryland National Guard Honor Guard and a bugler at thousands of military funerals, said having a phony hornsman hold up an instrument while a recording plays isn’t befitting of the somber task of burying a veteran. Yet, the piped-in version is what mourners will hear at virtually all New York military funerals beginning Oct. 1, due to a 25 percent reduction in federal funding for the state’s Military Forces Honor Guard.

“Taps, when it’s played by a live, professional musician, is much better than having a machine play it,” Villanueva said Wednesday. “No matter how you think you can hold the instrument, it doesn’t really appear that you’re playing it.”

Villanueva, who has performed Taps at countless military funerals, including at Arlington National Cemetery, said digital bugles have long been used by military officials during funerals due to the few qualified musicians available.

“But it’s much better to have a live player; it’s just more of an emotional thing,” he said. “The playing of Taps is open to musical interpretation. I play it a little slower, and hold out notes a little differently.”

A 25 percent cut in the $3.3 million in federal funding for New York’s Military Forces Honor Guard in fiscal year 2013 led to a 29 percent reduction in the program that funds Honor Guard units, said Eric Durr, a spokesman for the New York National Guard.

Due to that reduction, Durr said New York State will no longer hire musicians to play Taps as of Oct. 1 unless someone volunteers services free of charge.

“Since about 2003, the New York National Guard has been using the electronic bugle for most [funerals],” Durr said. “Prior to that, it was basically a guy with a boom box, so the electronic bugle is much nicer.”

In a statement to FoxNews.com, the Veterans of Foreign Wars said it was “extremely disheartened” to learn of the development.

“We were extremely disheartened to hear that the playing of Taps is being viewed more as an expense item than a necessary tribute to a fallen American patriot,” the statement read. “It’s disrespectful to the families because our military and veterans ask for so little in return compared to what is risked and often given.”

According to federal guidelines, the burial of an eligible veteran shall consist of no less than two members of the armed forces, including one member of the parent service of the deceased veteran.

“The honor detail will, at a minimum, perform a ceremony that includes the folding and presenting of the American flag to the next of kin and the playing of Taps,” a Department of Defense website reads. “Taps will be played by a bugler, if available, or by electronic recording. Today, there are so few buglers available that the Military Services often cannot provide one.”

Durr said more than 300 military funerals per month staffed by the Honor Guard will be affected. He said no complaints had been received regarding the policy shift. The use of electronic bugles at military funerals has been in use since as early as 2003 under authorization by President George W. Bush as the number of Iraq War deaths and the growing number of deceased World War II veterans stretched resources.

“This is not a new thing. Most [funerals] have been done this way in the state since 2003,” Durr said. “We’re providing the services required by law. Our guys are very professional; they do a very good job.”

Electronic bugles, however, are not foolproof, according to Louis DiLeo, of Seaford, N.Y., who has played more than 7,000 funerals in New York since he was contracted in 2006. DiLeo told Stars and Stripes malfunctioning devices have marred military funerals.

“It’s sad, because this has been a time-honored tradition for 150 years,” he told the newspaper. “It shows the families that we care that much more. Taking live Taps away takes away the human element.”

Villanueva, meanwhile, said that while the electronic version is an “acceptable” alternative, nothing beats the real thing.

“I would hope there’s support for live players,” he said. “As a bugler and someone who has Taps close to my heart, I’d much rather have it performed live. But it’s the way of the world right now with budgets.”

Unless you’ve lost a loved one who has served in the past or recent present, attended their funerals…listened to a live member playing TAPS during this process and understood what it means, then maybe you don’t understand my outrage regarding this, but outraged I am and will remain so. This must be halted now…it’s a must, otherwise it will it will be spread like a virus to other states. Filthy blue states like NY can and should cut tons of other useless socialist items they impose upon others that do ‘cut into their budgets’ now…starting with themselves first and foremost!

Say a prayer folks….this nation needs it now more than ever!

  1. The democrats have always targeted the military when cuts are made and use the military as pawns against the GOP when cuts are attempted against their ghetto darling parasites and other democrap voters

Look how many times recently they have threatened not to even pay the troops because they failed to pass a budget. When GOP members try to pass a bill to ensure that troops pay would never be threatened regardless of budget issues the DEMOCRAPS rejected it because it would take a bargaining chip from them. Anyone in the military voting for a democrap is liken to a chicken voting for Harlan Sanders.

They hate us and consider us a necessary evil that they would love to hide. They act like they care in order to hide their anti american beliefs but their RECORD clearly shows otherwise.. Democraps are no friend to the military no matter how many photo ops the POTUS and his wife seek for political gain… they are hypocrites!

Dont be fooled by this so called work program for vets either my friends. They have been providing what they call help on this for years.. they have some apathetic government employee ( generally Obama voters get these jobs ) help you with a resume, and job searches, well actually its all on line they just sit there drinking coffee and chatting with each other while the soldier sweats out his own future.. THAT DOES NOT GET A VET THE JOB!!! Dont buy into their slick packaging.. they are not really helping vets its all smoke and mirrors so the general public will be comforatable with the hundreds of thousands of patriots who will lose thier jobs so Obama and his cronies can keep feeding the welfare queens who vote for him…

    • As a Vet I agree with you Vince the Democrats have shown nothing but disdain for the Military. And this is not a recent trend it has been this way for decades now. The will never show respect to us because they fear us they see us as men and women who will write a check that they would not dare write themselves. The fear us because they know that if push came to shove they would cower in fear whilst we would do the fighting. They fear us because we are the last bastion of manliness so they will do everything they can to destroy that. Fear not though there is a rising sense of outrage and anger at was has been done to us and to the country, I only hope it is enough to get that bastard out of office.

  3. Gotta save money for those poor elected officals to fly around the world and eat dog and other tasties ( ever read ‘Farnhams Freehold’? The book sure rings true today.).
My youngest plays in the Ole Miss Band and is part of a volunteer group that will play at a vets funeral if no local player is available. He has never been paid and covers his own travel expense ( often out of state).
He is making his own way on scholarships and working after class in resturants , as event security and House Boy at a sorority( that one I envy him).
Not all of the youth of this country are the ‘Urban Yoots’. Not all of them buy the B.S. coming out of both parties lie holes either but I fear they are out numbered.

  4. The left’s utter disdain for our military servicemen knows no bounds. My father-in-law was spat upon and called a baby killer by filthy hippies (now leftists in our government) after returning from Vietnam.

Obama has a FORM letter signed with an e-pen sent to our some of the most elite’s families MONTHS after their funerals.

So, this does not surprise me at all. I’m so continually enraged by this administration, I almost think I’m either becoming used to/desensitized to it.

    And that ain’t good…

  5. These asshats have no respect for anything, not even themselves. They can’t and won’t even take care of themselves. “The govenment will do it! You didn’t build that! The people belong to the govenment!”
What else can you expect from them? It’s hilarious how these butt nuggets are so concerned about a dollar they stole anyway. Isn’t socialism and communism all about eliminating the need for currency and it’s associated evils as they see it?

In any event, maybe some vets up in N.Y should take some bugle or trumpet lessons and show up anyway…

Let’s show the pukes what “Yes we can!” really means!

  6. This is what blue states do. Better to denegrate a vet than cut welfare funds. A small part of why there is a great politcal divide in this nation. Those Marxist assholes even booed God yesterday at their socalled convention.

  7. I read, years ago, that the Bugler will play a recording.
this has been going on for years.

  8. The people running our so-called government now are the hippies, radicals etc. from the 60’s.

When I returned from Viet Nam in November 1966 my plane landed at the old Hamilton Air Force Base in California just North of San Francisco. We were loaded into a bus to return to our various temporary assignments. The Students For Democratic Society were waiting for us outside Hamilton. I will never forget the tomatos, eggs, etc. that were thrown at the bus as we pulled out of the main gate. Filthy, unwashed, long haired creeps screamed at us and called us baby killers and murderers. These are the people in Government today. You can see many of them in Charlotte on TV today.

I still to this day wonder why did I serve in Viet Nam to come home to this kind of treatment.

    • Our world is upside down John…I remember what you speak of happening to those who served when they arrived too.

Honor, Respect and Gratitude are words that mean zilch to the leftist marxist in this country…it’s plain to see today in volumes.

      Disgusting disgrace.

Gratitude from our home to yours sir…eternally grateful. ~

  10. If you are in need of a “real” bugler to play taps, please visit Bugles Across America http://www.buglesacrossamerica.org/

I have contacted them for a bugler for my father (WWII Army) and mother (WWII WAC) after hearing a recording on the distorted speakers for my father in laws (WWII Army) funeral. There is not a cost for this service, although I did give $20 both times to the bugler for coffee and lunch. Both times I was contacted by a bugler within 12 hours. As a trumpet player myself, I cringe at the sound of the recordings. I have a problem with my feet right now which prevents me from playing at the funerals due to being unable to walk across uneven ground very well. (you do not want to fall carrying a 3 thousand dollar trumpet) I do however play for a few veterans groups on Veterans Day as a payback for all that they have done.

    • Thank you for that link…I wished I had remember that about them and that site when I posted this late last night. In fact Bruce, I did some blog post about them quite awhile back now…wished I could recall it so I could put it here too for a refresher.

Nevertheless…thank you so much, and God Bless you and yours. 😉

  11. Is there somewhere that we can donate to that will help pay for a real bugler at military funerals?

    (0)
    • herbie,

Please see my comment above. The cost of the bugler is free. The bugler is auditioned to see if they are capable of playing taps. The actual song is 24 notes long. But, it must be played properly and reverently. Mistakes by a live bugler will happen.( I have played it many times and still get emotional) The bugler will show up to play dressed appropriately. You can donate to the website above if you wish. I am not affiliated with them at all at this time.

  12. Next, our service men and women will have guns that only make the sound of a gun going “bang!” This will save Obama loads of money on projectiles, so the IRS and FEMA crews will have more funds to get real projectiles for the citizenry. Safe as a bug in a rug.

Vote Romney, or buy a pop gun.

  13. Here’s the latest from Obama jerk puke as received from a fellow military retiree:

The No. 1 issue that will defeat Obama

Exclusive: Joseph Farah identifies BHO policy proposal GOP could
    exploit to victory

There’s an issue out there that can ensure Barack Obama is defeated in
    2012.
    It’s not Obamacare.
    It’s not his religious views.
It’s not his commitment to socialist and anti-American causes.
It’s not even the birth certificate and his eligibility issues.

I believe the issue that will take Obama down if Republicans make it
an issue is his administration’s proposed budget cuts for active-duty
military personnel and military retirees – but not civilian defense workers.
    Do you get the picture?

Obama has tipped his hand. He’s showing the entire country what he
thinks about our military service people – the people who risk their
lives for their country are worth less than civilian defense workers
who push papers around in ****Washington**** .

Chances are you don’t know much about this story. There’s a good
reason for that. The Big Media don’t want you to know, because they
recognize the political radioactivity it represents. This is the Death
Star for Obama’s re-election campaign. If Americans know about this –
Republicans, Democrats and independents all oppose him.

Here are the details of the story broken by the intrepid Bill Gertz:

a.. “The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget calls for
military families and retirees to pay sharply more for their health
care, while leaving unionized civilian defense worker’ benefits untouched.”
b.. “Several congressional aides suggested the move is designed to
increase the enrollment in Obamacare’s state-run insurance exchanges.”
c.. “The disparity in treatment between civilians and uniformed
personnel is causing a backlash within the military that could
    undermine recruitment and retention.”
d.. “Significantly, the plan calls for increases between 30 percent to

79 percent in Tricare annual premiums for the first year. After that,
the plan will impose five-year increases ranging from 94 percent to
345 percent – more than three times current levels.”

Think about this – and imagine how you would campaign against Obama on
    just this one issue.

****U.S.**** military service people don’t get the equipment they need
to do their jobs. They don’t have the manpower they need to complete
their missions. Their families scrimp and sacrifice financially so
they can serve their country. They risk their lives and give their
    lives for their country.
But, according to the Obama administration, unionized civilian defense
workers, sitting behind their comfortable desks in **Washington** ,
deserve better treatment than our heroes serving overseas in **Iraq**
    and **** Afghanistan**** and elsewhere.
It’s almost unbelievable that Obama could serve up a slow-pitch
softball like this for Republicans to knock out of the park.
It’s even more unbelievable that none of them has.
Which is why I write this column.
Obama needs to pay for this. Whether or not he backs off, whether or
not Congress throws his budget out the window, whether or not these
cuts are ever enacted, Obama needs to pay a big political price for
showing his cards. Republicans need to remind Americans every day that
Obama is the guy who wants to cut medical care for soldiers, sailors,
Marines and airmen – all while preserving the goodies for Washington bureaucrats.
Men and women who put their lives on the line, who risked their health
and well-being, are treated like second-class citizens in ObamaWorld.
He signaled his absolute contempt for the ****U.S.**** military – not
just the institution of the military, but the active-duty grunts on
    the front lines.

This is an easy one for the American people to understand.
    So where are the Republicans?
    Where are the talk-show hosts?
    Where is the blogosphere chatter?
Obama has stepped in something very smelly here. Why aren’t more Obama
    critics making hay of it?
    Can you understand it?

ALWAYS BARGAIN FROM A POSITION OF STRENGTH

Obama and the Muslim brotherhood would like The United States to lose
it’s “position of strength” and its bargaining power!

If we lose our military, we would lose our credibility in the world
    political arena.

So, weaken our military and our credibility is weakened.
